Maps in Great Painting: The masterpiece by Albrecht Altdorfer (1482-1538) "The Battle of Issus" from 1529 at Alte Pinakothek in Munich contains a "super modern" 3-D perspective (bird-eye) represetantion of the geography of East Mediterranean (Cyprus, the Red Sea and the Nile Delta) in a really impressive view. It is worth a visit!

Digital approaches to cartographic heritage, Barcelona 26-27 June

The third international workshop on the Digital approaches to cartographic heritage was held in Barcelona, 26-27 June 2008. Organized by the International Cartographic Association Commission on Digital technologies in cartographic heritage in cooperation with the Institut Cartografic de Catalunya. Twenty nine papers were presented in six sessions dedicated to the following issues: 1. Cartographic heritage. Miltidisciplinarity, sustainability, dissemination; 2. Transformation into digital form; 3. Information & Communication Technology - Web; 4. Spatial data infrastructures and digital map libraries; 5. Digital analysis and interpretation of historic maps. A session was also dedicated to the DIGMAP project.
In association with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Cartography Group, the Hellenic Cartographic Society and the International Web Journal "e-Perimetron".

10th Hellenic Cartographic Conference

The Hellenic Cartographic Society (HCS) is organizing its 10th Cartographic Conference to be held in the lake city of Ioannina, in NW Greece, known from the writings of many 18th century geographers and travellers like Willian Martin Leake, François Charles Hugues Laurent Pouqueville and others.
The Conference general theme is: Cartography of the mainland: Borders – Barriers – Carriers – Standards and Quality and for those reading Greek the announcement and call for papers can be found in the HCS web site.

In association with the Region of Epirus, the Province of Ioannina, the Municipality of Ioannina, the Society of Epirotic Studies, the Technical Chamber of Greece / Section of Epirus, the University of Ioannina, the National Technical University of Athens and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

The revised version of the 1998 almost homonymous book by E. Livieratos is now published (in Greek), December 2007, by Ziti Publishers under the title 25 Centuries of Cartography and Maps: A tour from the Ionians to Ptolemy and Rigas. In 263 pages [210X287 mm] illustrated with 241 grayscale images the book narrates the 25 centuries of cartography and maps in six chapters: 1. Why the maps? (the human visual perception paradox and the maps), 2. The Greeks (principles of Ancient Greek cartography and the names), 3. Ptolemy (the culmination of Greek cartography), 4. Middle Ages (from the fall of Rome to the capture of Constantinople), 5. Renaissance (the western period of Ptolemy cartography and the renaissance of cartography), 6. Science and Enlightenment (from geodetic cartography to Rigas Charta).

The Mediterranean Map Library

The Mediterranean Map Library (MML) team is pleased to inform that a new version of MML site is online. There are references concerning Near-East countries: Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, and the towns of Beirut and Damascus.
The Meditarranean Map Library is a project of the Maison Mediterranιenne des Sciences de l'Homme (MMSH) in Aix-en-Provence. This project realizes a collective repertory and catalogue of maps and plans of towns of Mediterranean countries. This catalogue primarily consists of map series rather than in single maps or plans. Its main characteristic is a graphic interface allowing the access to information: documents are identified by their location. Each map series goes with a descriptive notice and is represented by a graphic index drawn on a background enabling location spotting.

Imago Mundi Prize to George Tolias

The Directors of Imago Mundi Ltd are delighted to announce that the second Imago Mundi Prize has been awarded to George Tolias for 'Nikolaos Sophianos's "Totius Graeciae Descriptio": the resources, diffusion, and function of a sixteenth-century antiquarian map of Greece,' which appeared in Imago Mundi 58, no. 2 (2006): 150-182. Dr Tolias is Research Director of the Institute for Neohellenic Re-search, The National Hellenic Research Foundation, in Athens.
The judges considered this article to be "a most accomplished work of historical and cartobibliographical scholarship. Dr Tolias has provided a coherent argument for the importance of this map of ancient and modern Greece, deftly placing it within the contemporary contexts of European humanism and the Reformation. In particular, he has elucidated the connection of the work to the era's ideological-religious crisis through his skilful examination of the reading of the map by contemporaries and demonstrated its influence in both Roman Catholic and Protestant Europe. The result is an essay that marshals an impressive array of evidence to give a well rounded and complete cartographic analysis, an analysis that significantly expands our understanding of the place of cartography in early modern culture."
The prize is offered every two years. This award covered Volumes 57 (2005)and 58(2006). The winning article is the one judged 'to have made the most significant contribution to the discipline'. Full length articles are eligible for the prize but not short articles, since it is only full length articles that are automatically subjected to the (anonymous) external refereeing process before acceptance for publication.
The winner […] qualifies for a J.B. Harley Travel Award to the next biennial Interna-tional Conference on the History of Cartography (Berne, 8-13 July 2007).

Digitized Holy Land Maps

The JNUL (Jewish National and University Library), David & Fela Shapell Family Digitization Project is pleased to announce the opening to the public of the digital collection: Holy Land Maps. This project, based on the Eran Laor Cartographic Collection at the JNUL, contains over 1,000 maps dating from 1462 through the early 20th century.

Each map is presented in a variety of image formats, including the zoomable MrSid format (which requires a special plug-in, available atthe project site). The maps are arranged both chronologically and by persons (cartographers, engravers, etc.). A number of maps are arranged by specific locations such as Acre or Mount Tabor (maps of Jerusalem arein a separate, previous, site). The bilingual site also contains an introduction and links to relatedsites. Each map is accompanied by detailed bibliographic data.

Antonio Millo Isolario

A fresh publication from Greece:
The manuscript Isolario by Antonio Millo, dedicated to Signor Sforza Palavicino (1582) was recently published in Greece, thanks to the collector Sylvia Ioannou, possesor of the original.
In the 300 pages high quality volume, Millo's isolario is reproduced in facsimile (the original italian text is transcribed for easier reading), with translations in Greek and in English. Agamemnon Tselikas, made the Italian transcription and the translation in Greek; Eleni Agathou the translation in English. With contributions by George Tolias, Leonora Navari and Artemis Scutari.

Maps in Grand Painting

Francis Herberr, RGS, f.herbert@rgs.org comments: "....A Goya portrait in oils of the 6 years-old Infante Don Luis Maria de Borbon y Vallabriga (nephewof Carlos III of Spain) of 1783 that had hitherto been in private hands (or "only slightly grubby after two centuries of hanging on the walls ofthe private palaces of a series of dukes"); as it depicts maps, and is now at Museo del Prado in Madrid for conservartion, this news mightinterest art historians, map historians, historians of scientificinstruments (etc.). It is expected to be hung later at Zaragoza's city museum. The Infante is shown "standing over a map of the world" [sic - i.e. heis standing in front of a framed cartographic outline depiction of Europe] and holding "a piece of a puzzle map of Spain in one [i.e.right] hand and a compass in the other [left]... (posted in Maphist).
